Wax — the apiary's second harvest

Old combs, cappings and wax scrapings are valuable raw material that should never be thrown away. A solar wax melter renders light cappings wax at zero running cost, steam and electric melters handle even old dark combs, and a wax press squeezes the last gram out of the residue. The rendered wax is traded in for foundation or sold.

Which wax melter to choose?

For a small apiary a solar wax melter is enough — it works all summer unattended. Medium and large apiaries do better with a steam melter (gas or electric) that takes whole frames, combs and all — the wax melts out while the frames are disinfected in the same pass. A wax-honey separator recovers the honey from the cappings, so not a drop of the harvest is lost.
